The Growing Role of Artificial Intelligence in Expanding Interventional Treatment for Acute Pulmonary Embolism

Materials & Methods
This retrospective study evaluated the impact of implementing an AI-based pulmonary embolism (PE) detection algorithm (Aidoc, Tel Aviv, Israel) on Pulmonary Embolism Response Team (PERT) activations and interventional management. Patients with CT-confirmed PE between Nov. 2022 and June 2025 were included. Pre- and post-AI implementation data were compared for PERT activations and catheter-directed interventions, focusing on intermediate-high and high-risk PE patients.

Results
Prior to AI implementation, an average of 52 PE patients were treated every six months, compared to 145 after integration — representing a 73% increase (p < 0.001). AI triage facilitated faster identification of PE, leading to a substantial rise in interventional procedures among higher-risk patients.

Conclusions
Integration of AI-based triage significantly improved PERT activation frequency and increased catheter-directed interventions in intermediate-high and high-risk PE patients. The use of AI in PE management enhanced detection accuracy, reduced diagnostic delays, and supported earlier, guideline-aligned treatment decisions.
