At 82, Carolyn was completing another round of cancer treatment and looking forward to what came next: more time with family, camping trips, community events, and the active life she shares with her husband of 62 years.

“I like to go, go, go,” she said.

That mindset has carried Carolyn through two cancer journeys with WellSpan Health. After surgery and chemotherapy several years ago, she returned to treatment this year for another surgery and six rounds of chemotherapy. When she completed her final treatment this summer, she rang the bell for the second time.

Her follow-up CT scan at WellSpan Imaging – Hanover was expected to be a routine check. Nobody knew that instead, the outpatient scan could have saved her life that day.

The scan revealed a suspected incidental pulmonary embolism — a blood clot in the lung that Carolyn didn’t know she had.

When a routine scan becomes urgent

Carolyn’s case was flagged and prioritized for rapid review by a radiologist. Within about an hour, Carolyn’s care team contacted her and her husband about the confirmed finding, and explained what she needed to do next.

The news was surprising and frightening. Carolyn called her daughters and let them know she was on her way to WellSpan York Hospital. The team there knew about her pulmonary embolism and was ready to begin treatment as soon as she arrived.

A scan that began as a routine part of cancer follow-up had led to a life-threatening finding, a coordinated response, and a clear next step. How was WellSpan Health able to coordinate care so quickly?

Helping WellSpan Health prioritize the cases that need attention

WellSpan uses Aidoc to support imaging review for certain suspected critical findings. When Aidoc identifies a suspected finding, it flags the study for radiologist review and brings attention to cases that may require timely clinical follow-up.

Technologies like Aidoc help us flag and prioritize certain suspected critical findings so we can focus our attention where it is needed most.”

For Carolyn, the impact was personal. She was already managing the physical and emotional demands of cancer treatment. The rapid review of her scan helped her care team respond to an additional health concern without adding more uncertainty than necessary.

From one patient’s experience to system-wide impact

Carolyn’s story is one example of how WellSpan Health is applying AI-supported imaging across its health system. Aidoc-supported workflows extend across multiple service lines, including cardiology, vascular surgery, and neuroscience, helping teams prioritize suspected findings across a broad range of conditions.

WellSpan Health reports that, since implementing Aidoc in 2023, outpatient critical-case imaging turnaround time has decreased from 25 hours to just over two hours, making same-day imaging the norm for many patients. More than 6,000 patients have benefited from earlier case prioritization across 1.7 million scans analyzed to date.

The partnership is designed to help create a repeatable process for identifying suspected critical findings, directing them to the right clinical experts, and supporting timely follow-up for patients.

With chemotherapy behind her, Carolyn is looking forward to feeling more like herself, spending time with family, and returning to the activities that keep her moving.
