Impact of AI-Based Prioritization and Triage on Wait Times for Suspected Incidental Pulmonary Embolism in Routine Contrast Enhanced Abdominal CT Scans at a Large Academic Institution

Materials & Methods

This study evaluated the effectiveness of an AI-driven system (Aidoc) for alerting to suspected incidental pulmonary embolisms (iPE) on routine outpatient abdominal CT scans that do not include dedicated chest imaging. AI was used to analyze 4,447 contrast-enhanced abdominal CT scans performed between January to July 2023. Notifications for suspected iPE were triggered in 3.2% of cases.

Results

In measuring the time from CT scan completion to the start of the radiologist’s report dictation, cases with suspected PE flagged by AI had a median wait time for radiologist review of 37.7 minutes, compared to 168.5 minutes for cases not flagged by AI. This represents a 78% reduction in wait time.

Conclusions

Findings indicate that AI-triggered notifications can significantly enhance workflow efficiency and expedite the reporting of potentially life-threatening incidental PE, which may lead to more timely interventions.
