Impact of AI-Assisted Triage on Radiologist Review Initiation for CT Angiography in Aortic Dissection

Materials & Methods
This ongoing retrospective, single-center study analyzed 1,266 consecutive outpatient CT angiography (CTA) scans acquired between Sept. 2023 and March 2024. A commercially available AI algorithm (Aidoc, Tel Aviv, Israel) was deployed to detect and prioritize studies with suspected aortic dissection (AD). Wait time was defined as the interval between scan acquisition and radiologist review initiation, and median times were compared between AI-flagged AD-positive (AD+) and AD-negative (AD–) cases using Mood’s median test.

Results
Among the 1,266 CTA scans, 63 (5%) were flagged as AD+ and 1,203 (95%) as AD–. Median wait time for AI-flagged AD+ studies was 119 minutes compared to 150 minutes for AD– cases (p = 0.196). Of the AD+ cases, 52 were chronic, 4 were acute and 7 were unspecified dissections.

Conclusions
Implementation of AI-assisted triage for CTA scans in the outpatient setting demonstrated early evidence of reduced radiologist review times for suspected aortic dissections. Ongoing data collection aims to validate these preliminary findings and assess long-term workflow benefits.
