AI Deployment in Aortic Aneurysm Care: Yale New Haven Health Cases

Nearly 1.1 million people are living with Abdominal Aortic Aneurysms (AAA) and most aneurysms are found incidentally. Early detection is critical as it improves patient outcomes by providing the opportunity for elective surgery versus emergent repair. Today, AI is showing promise in its ability to identify patients with AAA and streamline pathways to ensure follow up. 

Dr. Edouard Aboian, Vascular and Endovascular surgeon of Yale New Haven Health, shares two use cases in which AI played a significant role in coordinating and ultimately expediting patient treatment.

Use Case: Repair of Aortic Aneurysm and Renal Carcinoma

In this complex patient case, multiple comorbidities were present, including renal carcinoma, abdominal aortic aneurysm, bilateral iliac artery aneurysms, and a lung lesion. The AI technology played a significant role by facilitating the coordination of care and expediting the treatment process. The time to treatment was reduced as two procedures could be completed within the time typically required for one. Ultimately, all repairs were successful, and subsequent treatments were carried out within a timeline of six weeks.

Use case: Rapid expansion of AAA outside typical follow-up window

A patient diagnosed with a 4.5 cm AAA who was under surveillance and follow-up, presented at the hospital months before his scheduled follow-up with evidence of fever and shortness of breath. A CT scan demonstrated a significant increase in AAA. Aidoc’s AI enabled the vascular surgery team to immediately identify the patient with an accelerated growth rate outside the typical follow-up window, and the patient was brought back for urgent repair.
