Radiologists + AI: Driving Enhanced Awareness and Elevating the Standard of Care

When it comes to bringing AI into a healthcare system, an often top-of-mind concern from radiologists is the fear that AI is going to replace the need for their role.

This couldn’t be further from the reality of AI’s role in radiology and healthcare. As Jason Poff, MD, Director of Innovation and Deployment at Radiology Partners, explains: There’s a role — and, more importantly, a need  — for both AI and radiologists in healthcare.

The Impact of AI Tools on Radiologists’ Responsibilities

AI isn’t a replacement, it’s a tool meant to enhance the radiologists’ skillset. While the AI tool can enhance disease awareness in medical imaging, the legal and clinical responsibility ultimately sits with the radiologist.

AI in the Rib Fracture Model

Dr. Poff uses a rib fracture model to illustrate the impact of AI on radiologists. He shares that enhanced disease awareness is the radiologists’ improved ability to detect issues due to awareness provided by AI triage and notification tools.

For example, in a data set of 6,000 patients, radiologists identified 114 rib fractures, while AI identified 173. The 69 additionally flagged rib fractures were due to the assistance of AI.

Dr. Poff explains that there are two ways to measure the impact: relative boost and absolute enhanced ability to identify different health conditions. The relative boost is calculated as 69 over 114, resulting in a 61% increase in ability to identify different health conditions. The absolute enhanced ability to identify different health conditions rate is 69 rib fractures out of 5,800 patients, equating to a 1.2% improvement.
