Assessing the Impact of an AI-Powered Triage and Prioritization System on Cervical Spine Fracture Detection through CT Imaging

Materials & Methods

This study analyzed cervical spine CT scans from an academic health system between Sept. 2023 and March 2024, measuring wait times from study completion to radiologist dictation. Median wait times were compared between AI-flagged (AI+) and non-flagged (AI-) cases.

Results

A total of 2,009 neck CT scans were analyzed, with 71 flagged by AI and 1,938 non-AI-notified. AI-notified scans had a significantly shorter median wait time of 99 minutes (IQR: 458.9) compared to 225.7 minutes (IQR: 1187.6) for non-AI cases, reducing wait time by 56.1% (126.7 minutes, p < 0.05).

Conclusions

AI-driven triage significantly reduced wait times for suspected C-spine injury CT scans, highlighting its potential to improve diagnostic efficiency and patient care in the outpatient setting.
