What to Expect at RSNA 2025

The Radiological Society of North America (RSNA) is set to host its annual meeting in November, continuing its legacy as the world’s premier medical imaging conference. Since its founding in 1915, RSNA has brought together radiologists, executives and other medical imaging professionals to advance the field of radiology.

The RSNA conference is held in Chicago at McCormick Place, attracting more than 50,000 attendees from over 145 countries. RSNA 2025 whose theme this year is “Imaging the Individual” is shaping up to be a dynamic event with an anticipated focus on innovations like AI in radiology and solutions to address ongoing challenges, such as radiologist burnout and staffing shortages.

What to Expect at This Year’s RSNA Conference

RSNA 2025 promises to be a key event for professionals seeking the latest in radiological advancements. So far, 651 vendors are registered to exhibit. Let’s dive into some of the major themes we anticipate to see at this year’s conference:

Radiologist Shortage and Burnout

As the population ages and medical technology advances, there’s a greater need and demand for imaging than ever before. The challenge: This rise in demand comes at a time of radiology workforce shortages. A study published in Clinical Imaging found that nearly half of responding facilities experienced radiology vacancies and 68% had unreported exams. By 2034, these shortages are expected to double.

At the physician level, radiologists are paying the price in burnout, which will only continue to impact already existing shortages. The shortage of radiologists has been a focal point at RSNA, and we anticipate that 2025 will be no different.

AI in Radiology

AI continues to be a cornerstone at RSNA, now deeply embedded across the imaging workflow. The conference has become the epicenter for innovations in radiology AI, with AI exhibitors making up one of the largest product categories on the floor. AI in radiology will continue to expand, particularly in high-need areas like dementia, Alzheimer’s, lung cancer and heart disease.

AI tools are primarily used to assist radiologists by helping to speed up diagnoses, triage urgent cases and improve overall radiology workflows. Looking ahead, generative AI tools will help radiologists save time by automating routine tasks such as drafting and structuring reports — particularly the “impression” section — based on dictated findings, then translating these reports into patient-friendly language, further improving efficiency and reducing burnout.

Takeaways From Last Year’s RSNA Conference

To get a sense of what RSNA 2025 may offer, it’s helpful to reflect on some key takeaways from the 2024 conference:

  • A Turning Point for Clinical AI
There’s been a shift from pilot AI tools to platform‑based orchestration, with centralized dashboards for continuous deployment, performance tracking, and model drift mitigation. Explainability, accountability, and standardization (clinically and technically) were also highlighted as critical enablers for safe, scalable AI deployment.AI has evolved from an experimental tool to becoming an essential part of modern radiology practice. Many radiologists now view AI as critical to working at the top of their license. AI tools are becoming an integral part of their workflows, helping them manage increasing workloads while maintaining high standards of care.
  • From Potential to Real-World Impact
Foundation models emerged as the next phase of clinical AI. These models, trained on vast datasets and designed for generalizability, promised to tackle the most pressing challenges in healthcare AI, including accuracy, integration and real-world validation. The progress toward multimodal and unsupervised learning models is driving the industry closer to a future of precision medicine.
  • A Call to Lead AI Adoption
Radiologists must lead the charge in AI adoption. While the field, often steeped in tradition, is cautious about change, it’s imperative that radiologists lead the way. They must drive innovation, ensuring these tools align with clinical needs, patient safety and professional standards.
