The Future of Interventional Radiology: 5 Emerging Themes From SIR 2025

This year’s Society of Interventional Radiology (SIR) Annual Scientific Meeting gathered leading professionals to explore innovations in interventional radiology (IR). The event focused on a range of topics, from advances in pulmonary embolism (PE) treatment to AI’s role in patient care. Here are five consistent themes we heard about AI’s role in IR.

1. AI’s Impact on PE Treatment

One of the standout discussions highlighted the impact that AI alerts, like Aidoc’s mobile app, has on improving time-to-treatment. A retrospective study by Jefferson Einstein showed how Aidoc’s PERT mobile alerts can reduce exam-to-needle time by 17% in PE cases, resulting in faster interventions and improved patient outcomes1. Furthermore, the ED and radiology teams endorsed improved communication and synergy due to the implementation of the Aidoc mobile app.

2. Comprehensive DVT Management

Deep vein thrombosis (DVT) management was another key focus, with an emphasis on holistic management. Experts highlighted the importance of addressing both acute interventions and long-term care. For example, Aidoc’s DVT Care Coordination solution can surface relevant cases to interventionalists for clinical consideration and potential advanced therapies.

3. Advancements in PE Interventions

The SIR conference also showcased updates on PE interventions, including new investigational device exemption (IDE) trials and advancements in thrombectomy devices. It was exciting to see the varied innovations taking place, and we will continue to do our part to help clinicians with our PERT Solution.

4. AI Integration in IR

Another emerging theme was about the potential of AI in interventional radiology. Discussions centered on how AI can transform clinical practices, patient journeys and procedural care. For example, Aidoc’s AI-powered solutions help IR teams flag not just the suspected, but unexpected pathologies as well. AI can even triage acute pathologies within an IR’s worklist, enabling faster time-to-treatment.

5. Ethical Considerations of AI

The event also included several discussions around ethical implications, potential biases and their impact on IR teams and patients. As AI continues to accelerate, leaders must ensure that the AI tools they use in their health systems are developed with fairness, transparency and patient privacy in mind. At Aidoc, we’re proud to be leading the charge. Our very own Demetri Giannikopoulos recently shared about attending the “Coalition for Health AI (CHAI) on the Hill” event, and how Aidoc is collaborating closely with various stakeholders to help push for best practice AI transparency.

Looking Ahead: AI’s Impact on the Future of IR

SIR 2025 reinforced the significant role AI will play in shaping the future of IR. From improving emergency care for PE patients to advancing procedural workflows, AI has the potential to completely transform the way clinicians care for their patients.

At Aidoc, we are excited to continue advancing AI-powered solutions that enhance workflows, accelerate treatment and improve patient outcomes. The future of IR is bright, and we’re proud to be part of the AI-powered transformation.
