AI Transparency in Healthcare: A Pivotal Discussion on Capitol Hill

A few weeks ago, I had the incredible opportunity to attend and present at the inaugural “Coalition for Health AI (CHAI) on the Hill” event, hosted by Senator Mike Rounds (SD). This session delivered on the promises outlined in the bipartisan “Consumers LEARN AI” Act, co-sponsored by Senators Rounds and Mark Kelly (AZ).

It was a day filled with robust dialogue about AI transparency in healthcare and the strides we’ve made as an industry to tackle some of the most pressing challenges in this space.

A Clear Need for AI in Healthcare

If one thing became clear throughout the day, it’s this: healthcare is hungry for AI.

The need for workforce and workflow support has never been greater. However, this demand for AI augmentation doesn’t yet outweigh the uncertainty and confusion surrounding its adoption. How do we consume AI in a way that is ethical, legal and strategic? This question loomed large, highlighting the dual imperatives of clear regulation and transparency.

Interestingly, there was a sidebar conversation among attendees about regulation functioning as an enabler instead of a roadblock. Thoughtful oversight can create alignment and clarity while addressing the confusion inherent in such a rapidly evolving field.

Of course, regulation is not static. Just as the internet evolved in ways few could predict, so too will AI in healthcare. This evolution will require regulations to adapt alongside it, guided by the growing experience of the industry.

Transparency as the Bedrock of AI Adoption

Given this unpredictability, transparency emerged as a recurring theme. For AI to deliver on its potential, stakeholders with diverse and often asymmetric knowledge must have a common framework for understanding its capabilities and limitations. Tools like model cards and assurance labs provide a practical way to achieve this by breaking down complex AI models into their most fundamental components.

At Aidoc, we’re proud to lead this charge. Our CHAI model card represents a pivotal step toward transparency in clinical AI. In fact, we were the first vendor to complete a governance review process using this model card as a tool for evaluation by a health system – specifically, UMass.

During the event, I had the honor of presenting Aidoc’s completed model card alongside some of the most influential voices in healthcare technology: Micky Tripathi, PhD, MPP, Chief AI Officer at U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS); Ed Simcox, former CTO and interim CIO at HHS; and Celena Wheeler, Product Director of Health Data Intelligence at Oracle. Together, we demonstrated how our model card fosters alignment and builds trust across stakeholders.

High Stakes, High Standards

The conversations on Capitol Hill reinforced the unique position of clinical AI as both a high-risk and high-reward endeavor for health systems. Every use case, whether autonomous or augmentative, directly impacts patient care and outcomes.

This reality has subjected clinical AI to some of the most rigorous oversight across any industry – and rightly so. While such scrutiny may seem daunting, it also ensures that only the most trustworthy and reliable solutions emerge. By meeting these high standards for safety and efficacy, we can ensure clinical AI delivers on its transformative promise.

Aidoc’s Role as a Leader in AI Governance

“CHAI on the Hill” wasn’t only a conversation – it was a call to action. It’s time for all AI stakeholders to get involved, not just a select few.

Aidoc’s contributions to this space have solidified our reputation as a leader in AI transparency for healthcare. Through the hard work of our team, we’ve built the most proven and scaled implementation of AI in the industry. This gives us not just a seat at the table, but the ability to help to set the standard for best practice AI transparency.

I left Capitol Hill feeling both optimistic and energized. Clinical AI is undoubtedly complex, but with responsible development and a shared commitment to transparency, we’re setting the stage for incredible success.

Many thanks to Senator Rounds and all those who made this day possible. Together, we’re not just shaping the conversation; we’re shaping the future.
