Real-World Success Story from UofL Health: A Conversation with Jonathan Joshi, MD

Jonathan Joshi, MD, a radiologist at University of Louisville (UofL) Health, wears many hats — Emergency Radiology Section Chief, Vice Chair of Quality and Safety, Emergency Radiology Fellowship Program Director, Associate Professor and advocate for clinical AI.

He’s been instrumental in implementing AI solutions at UofL Health, leveraging the technology to enhance patient care and radiologist efficiency. I recently caught up with Dr. Joshi to discuss UofL Health’s experiences with Aidoc and his personal take on AI in healthcare.

“Our top priority is getting it right for the patient. AI offers tools that help us deliver thorough and accurate reports while managing growing workloads.”

AI Beginnings at UofL Health

UofL Health’s AI journey began by partnering with Aidoc to integrate solutions for identifying and triaging cases with critical findings. Aidoc’s reputation for robust algorithms and seamless integration into existing workflows was a driver in UofL Health’s decision to create a partnership.

“We wanted to be early adopters. Aidoc stood out as a radiology-first solution with proven success in enhancing diagnostic accuracy and workflow efficiency.”

Dr. Joshi emphasized that a major driver for AI adoption was the growing shortage of radiologists coupled with increasing caseloads. AI offered a way to manage these challenges by flagging urgent cases and enabling radiologists to focus on the most critical patients.

Enhancing Trainee Confidence and Well-Being

Burnout remains a significant concern in radiology. With 44% of male radiologists and 65% of female radiologists reporting feeling burned out, health systems are turning to AI as a way to address this.

At UofL Health, AI certainly has proven its utility in boosting the confidence of residents and providing essential support during high-pressure situations, such as night shifts. Dr. Joshi highlighted that AI not only assists trainees but also benefits experienced radiologists by reducing stress and enhancing confidence in their daily work, fostering a supportive environment for all.

The Role of Radiologists in Driving AI

As AI adoption grows, Dr. Joshi believes radiologists must take an active role in shaping its application within healthcare systems. Their expertise makes them well-positioned to guide AI development and help shape the course of the future.

“Radiologists understand the nuances of our work and the areas where AI can make the biggest impact. Having a seat at the table is crucial for successful implementation.”

Becoming an AI Champion: Lessons Learned

Dr. Joshi offered this advice for institutions looking to implement AI:

  1. Engage Stakeholders: Involve multidisciplinary teams to gain diverse perspectives.
  2. Share Success Stories: Use real-world examples to build trust and excitement.
  3. Leverage Existing Research: Use data from peer institutions to support adoption.

“AI adoption isn’t just about technology. It’s about creating a culture that prioritizes innovation and patient care.”

For Dr. Joshi, AI is more than a tool; it’s a partner in delivering better care. As imaging volumes rise and cases grow more complex, AI’s ability to help prioritize and analyze data becomes increasingly essential. Dr. Joshi sees AI becoming a standard of care, ensuring every patient receives the best possible outcomes.

Leading the AI Transformation

Dr. Joshi’s leadership at UofL Health demonstrates how AI can transform radiology. By embracing innovation, engaging stakeholders and prioritizing research, UofL Health is setting a standard for leveraging AI to improve workflows and patient care.

“AI is helping us deliver on our promise to patients. It’s exciting to be part of this journey and to see how it continues to shape the future of radiology.”
