A framework to integrate AI into clinical practice.
AI is no longer confined to radiology. It’s rapidly shaping care across multiple service lines. At Lehigh Valley Heart and Vascular Institute, interventional cardiologist Shailendra Singh, MD, has seen firsthand how Aidoc’s AI platform is transforming workflows for time-critical conditions like pulmonary embolism (PE).
As Associate Director of Interventional Cardiology and the Cardiac Cath Labs, Dr. Singh is helping lead the charge in applying AI to streamline interdisciplinary care, improve patient outcomes and build a more efficient system.
Like many clinicians, Dr. Singh initially approached AI with curiosity and a dose of skepticism.
“Within our group, there was healthy skepticism,” he shared. “But we were also forming our Pulmonary Embolism Response Team (PERT). With so many specialties involved, including emergency medicine, radiology, cardiology and critical care, we needed a way to bring everyone together quickly. Aidoc helped us close the gap between image acquisition and clinical activation.”
By embedding AI into the imaging ecosystem, Dr. Singh and his team could accelerate how quickly critical findings reached the right people, often in the middle of the night when delays could be deadly.
Before AI, decision-making often meant juggling pages, phone calls and logins across multiple systems. That process was even more complex given Lehigh Valley’s 15 spoke hospitals that rely on the institute for advanced interventions like pulmonary embolectomy.
“With Aidoc, the right people get notified at the right time with the imaging at their fingertips,” Dr. Singh explained. “It means fewer delays, faster time-to-treatment and improved coordination across the ED, radiology, hospital medicine cardiology and critical care.”
One case that stood out: a middle-of-the-night alert for a saddle PE in a young patient.
“I was at home, in bed. Aidoc alerted me immediately. I reviewed the CTA remotely, saw right heart strain and activated the team. Within three minutes the patient was transferred, and I was performing the procedure in under 30 minutes. Before, that would have taken hours.”
When asked about the next phase of AI adoption, Dr. Singh points to foundation models as a transformational shift.
“These models will change workflows from the very start of a patient’s journey,” he reflected. “The capability is immense, and while many clinicians can’t fully grasp it yet, it will be monumental.”
Dr. Singh emphasized that successful AI adoption isn’t just about the technology — it’s about the partnership.
“As a healthcare system, you’re always risk averse, and navigating that complexity takes time,” he said. “The best vendors are responsive, help problem-solve and work with you to get through hurdles together. That’s what has made Aidoc a great partner.”
“AI has already become an integral part of our daily workflow,” he said. “It’s helping us treat more patients, more effectively and more quickly than we ever could before.”
