The Future of Rural Healthcare Access Is Expertise at Scale

In many rural communities, seeing a specialist can mean driving hours for an appointment or waiting weeks for care. And as hospitals struggle to recruit clinicians, patients are often left with even fewer options.

The challenge won’t ease anytime soon. The Health Resources and Services Administration reports that thousands of communities across the country are already designated Health Professional Shortage Areas. Looking ahead, the Association of American Medical Colleges projects significant physician shortages through 2036, particularly in specialty care. 

Yet the challenge extends beyond workforce shortages alone. Aidoc’s Global CMO, Dr. Jesse Ehrenfeld, argues that rural communities face a dual challenge: limited access to specialists and limited access to advanced technology. For many patients, geography still impacts both.

Rethinking How Expertise Is Delivered

So how can specialist expertise reach more patients, regardless of where they are? A community hospital may never have every specialty represented on staff, nor should it need to. The opportunity is to make specialist expertise available wherever patients seek care.

Clinical AI is creating new ways for health systems to do exactly that. By helping clinicians identify critical conditions earlier and coordinate care more quickly, these tools can help bring highly specialized expertise to more people in need.

In Nevada, for example, Renown Health and Carson Tahoe Health have used clinical AI to support stroke care across a geographically dispersed region. When a patient arrives at a community hospital with signs of stroke, every second counts. Clinical AI helps:

  • Flag suspected stroke cases earlier
  • Alert all relevant members of the care team
  • Deliver imaging to the hub hospital instantly
  • Accelerate coordination between care teams across the hub and spoke hospitals

These workflow improvements help care teams move quickly to deliver appropriate interventions and improve patient outcomes.

Mercy has taken a similar approach at a larger scale. The health system recently deployed clinical AI across all 50 of its facilities, including rural hospitals. Rather than limiting AI capabilities to major medical centers, Mercy made them available across the network. The goal was to create a more consistent standard of care regardless of where patients entered the system.

The Future of Patient Care

For healthcare CEOs, improving access has traditionally meant building facilities, recruiting physicians, and expanding services into underserved communities. Those investments remain essential. Increasingly, however, access also depends on how effectively expertise is shared across a health system.

For generations, a patient’s ZIP code has influenced the care available to them. The next chapter of healthcare equity is making sure geography no longer determines access to expertise.
