Enhancing Pulmonary Embolism Management: The Impact of AI-Based Triage and Prioritization on Diagnostic Timeliness and Treatment Initiation

Materials & Methods

This retrospective study analyzed patients who underwent CT pulmonary angiogram (CTPA) for pulmonary embolism (PE) detection between Sept. 2023 and March 2024 using AI-based triage software. It examined the time from scan completion to clinical notification (NT) and the time to anticoagulation initiation (TTA) by reviewing radiology reports and patient charts.

Results

The study included 325 patients in the pre-AI group and 157 in the post-AI group. Results showed a significant reduction in NT in the post-AI group (mean: 33.54 minutes, interquartile range (IQR): 25 minutes) compared to the pre-AI group (mean: 64.41 minutes, IQR: 28 minutes) (p < 0.05). TTA also significantly decreased in the post-AI group (mean: 149.22 minutes, IQR: 93.75 minutes) vs. the pre-AI group (mean: 248 minutes, IQR: 197 minutes) (p < 0.05).

Conclusions

The AI-based triage system significantly reduced NT and TTA times for PE detection. These results demonstrate AI’s potential to enhance diagnostic efficiency, accelerate clinical responses and improve patient outcomes.
