Riverain Technologies and Aidoc: Faster Reads and Improved Nodule Detection

A recent University of Washington School of Medicine study, presented at the 2024 Radiological Society of North America (RSNA) annual meeting, explored how integrating advanced AI technologies can help enhance radiologists’ performance.

The study used Riverain Technologies’ ClearRead™ CT, integrated through Aidoc’s aiOS™ platform, to examine its impact on reading times and the detection of suspected pulmonary nodules in chest CT scans. Here’s what they found.

  • Reduced reading times
Radiology residents’ reading times decreased from an average of 19.1 minutes to 12.2 minutes, and attending radiologists’ times reduced from 6.6 minutes to 5.2 minutes. These improvements were achieved without compromising accuracy.
  • Improved detection of pulmonary nodules
The detection rates for small pulmonary nodules (≤2 mm) increased significantly, from 13% to 24.2%, demonstrating the potential of ClearRead™ CT to enhance visualization of clinically relevant findings.

Expert Insights on the Clinical Benefits

“This study highlights the benefits of ClearRead CT™ in terms of increased reading efficiency when radiologists have an unimpaired view of a chest CT,” noted Steve Worrell, CEO, Riverain Technologies. “Our AI-powered ClearRead technology provides a clear view of the lungs, enabling faster and more accurate identification of actionable pulmonary nodules.”

Kevin Chorath, MD, a resident in the University of Washington School of Medicine’s Department of Radiology, added, “Using real-world radiology workflows, we found that Riverain’s vessel suppression technology significantly reduced reading times for both residents and attending physicians. This efficiency is critical for ensuring timely and high-quality care for patients with elevated malignancy risks.”

Broader Implications for Radiology

The researcher noted that Aidoc’s AI platform, aiOS™ was instrumental in the study’s success by enabling the seamless integration of AI technologies into existing clinical workflows.

This integration allowed researchers to use AI-driven tools, such as Natural Language Processing (NLP), to analyze radiology reports and evaluate changes in detection rates and the frequency of specific findings, like punctate nodule mentions.*

The findings show implications beyond improving reading times. For patients at risk of cancer or with existing malignancies, faster and more accurate awareness of pulmonary nodules can lead to earlier interventions and potentially better outcomes. While the clinical significance of punctate nodules requires further research, the enhanced awareness rates achieved with the integration of AI suggest promising advancements in patient care.

Revolutionizing Radiology Workflows

This study demonstrates how AI technologies, such as Riverain’s ClearRead CT integrated through Aidoc’s platform, can help improve radiology workflows. By reducing reading times, improving awareness rates and providing advanced insights through NLP, these tools are reshaping the landscape of chest CT analysis.
