New Data Shows How Aidoc’s Brain Aneurysm Algorithm Performs in a Clinical Setting

Clinical AI isn’t intended to replace specialists. Instead, it acts as a complementary tool to optimize workflows and enhance patient care. This is particularly relevant for neuroradiologists and neurointerventionalists who support patients with brain aneurysms. These medical professionals must rapidly detect, diagnose and potentially perform interventions, making AI’s ability to triage worklists invaluable.

The Burden of Rapid Decision-Making

Imagine a neuroradiologist on a busy shift. They are faced with a constant stream of complex imaging studies, each potentially harboring a life-threatening condition. The pressure to make fast, accurate diagnoses is immense, as every minute counts when it comes to treating acute pathologies.

It’s in these critical moments that AI becomes an indispensable ally, providing an immediate alert to potential aneurysms. Automatically triaging worklists allows the radiologist to prioritize and focus their expertise where it’s needed most. This isn’t about replacing their judgment, but about providing an extra layer of support to help prioritize both the expected and unexpected.

How Aidoc’s Brain Aneurysm Algorithm Can Help Clinicians

Aidoc’s Brain Aneurysm Imaging AI uses intelligent orchestration, powered by the aiOS™ platform, to automatically run on all head CTAs within a facility, flagging AI suspected brain aneurysms. Cases are viewable in the mobile application to allow faster communication and to streamline decision making process. Confirmed sub-acute cases are routed to a Patient Management dashboard to help clinicians monitor and follow-up over time, leading to improved long-term outcomes.

How Aidoc’s Brain Aneurysm Algorithm Performs in a Clinical Setting

A recent retrospective study conducted at the University of Washington and presented at ASNR showcases the performance of our brain aneurysm algorithm.

There were 2,647 total scans reviewed for brain aneurysms, resulting in 190 positive CTAs and 249 aneurysms flagged (i.e., 1.31 aneurysms per positive CTA case). The results also showed how Aidoc performed in sensitivity, specificity and accuracy:

“While the AI tool was not designed to triage ruptured intracranial aneurysms, it also flagged 93% of such cases as suspected aneurysms.” – Mahmud Mossa-Basha, MD, University of Washington, Seattle, Washington

The Future of Collaborative Care

The algorithm’s high accuracy rates showcase just how helpful AI can be in clinical settings, serving as a complementary triage tool that enhances disease awareness, helps teams treat patients faster and improve overall patient outcomes. The collaboration between AI and human is significantly impacting patient lives. By integrating AI, hospitals are augmenting their teams’ ability to deliver the highest quality of care in the most efficient way possible.
