Vienna once again played host to one of the world’s most influential medical imaging events — ECR 2025 — bringing together over 20,500 participants from 131 countries. Under the theme “Planet Radiology”, this year’s congress explored how radiology can drive sustainability and global healthcare equity. With a 9% growth in attendance, it was clear that the radiology community is more engaged than ever in shaping the future of medical imaging.1
A few key themes took center stage:
Reflecting on the event’s success, Congress President Professor Andrea Rockall shared: “This congress has truly embodied the spirit of ‘Planet Radiology’. It has been a testament to radiology’s power to shape a healthier planet.” 1
Beyond the inspiring keynotes and packed exhibition halls, one theme stood out — AI is here, but it must scale to deliver real impact.
Walking through the AI exhibition, one thing was clear — AI in radiology is no longer a future concept. It’s here. The challenge now is scaling it effectively. While AI adoption is growing across Europe and the U.S., only a fraction of approved solutions are actively used in clinical practice.
This was a key focus of Aidoc Vice President of Europe Alexander Boehmcker’s presentation: “Deploying AI Solutions at Scale – Transforming Clinical Workflows with Aidoc’s aiOS Platform”. He shared real-world examples from Unfallkrankenhaus Berlin, Cedars-Sinai, and University Hospitals, where AI adoption has expanded to 20 clinical use cases, proving that AI isn’t just an isolated tool, it can be deeply embedded into workflows for lasting impact.2
Aidoc’s recent FDA clearance for its CARE1™ foundation model3 was also a major topic of discussion with our team, highlighting how foundation models drive:
Hospitals are adopting AI at an unprecedented pace, but fragmented solutions create inefficiencies. Without a unified platform to integrate, deploy and monitor AI at scale, healthcare systems will struggle to maximise its benefits. Aidoc’s aiOS™ platform is solving this, most recently with a 50-hospital AI deployment at Mercy, proving that when AI scales properly, it transforms care4.
It’s one thing to talk about AI at scale, but what does it actually mean for radiologists day-to-day? A major highlight at ECR 2025 was a three-year, Germany-wide survey from Reif & Möller, presented by Torsten Möller, PhD5. As Germany’s largest teleradiology network, they’ve been using AI routinely since 2022, and their findings were striking:
Radiologists aren’t just accepting AI. They’re embracing it, and they don’t want to work without it. It’s helping increase confidence, and, ultimately, making radiology a more rewarding profession. As Europe faces a growing shortage of radiology professionals, AI’s ability to enhance efficiency has never been more critical.
ECR 2025 wasn’t just about new technology, it was about how we make AI work in the real world. The future of radiology depends not just on smarter (or more!) algorithms but on seamless integration, clinical adoption and real-world impact. If this year’s congress showed us anything, it’s that AI is ready. Now, we just need to deploy it where it matters most, in a smart and scalable way.
