Aidoc and The PERT Consortium: New Possibilities for PE Care

Aidoc recently joined the leading organization in Pulmonary Embolism Response Team (PERT) research, education, and advocacy – The PERT Consortium. Since 2015, The PERT Consortium focuses on guiding and influencing pulmonary embolism (PE) care and research in institutions across the U.S. and aims to be the driving force behind increased survival rates and the future of PE treatment.

We spoke with Jake Schauberger, Senior Product Marketing Manager at Aidoc, to further explore why this partnership is so meaningful for Aidoc and about the remarkable contributions members of The PERT Consortium are making to patients and health systems.

What role is Aidoc currently playing in PE care?

Aidoc offers an AI-powered PE workflow solution that improves the radiologic turnaround time  and prioritization awareness of PEs that can present across a health system. PEs can present at multiple points within health systems, which increases the need for the coordination of care to streamline shared clinical decision making across specialties. 

PERTs have emerged to ensure PE patients receive the necessary consultation, ultimately improving clinical outcomes through multidisciplinary treatment planning and consideration. In addition to the radiology AI-powered solution, PERTs can use Aidoc’s PE Care Coordination solution to view suspected PE studies, risk stratify potential cases based on RV/LV ratios, examine relevant clinical lab/vital data from the EMR, and initiate cross departmental chat from a single seamless mobile application and workflow.

Why is addressing Pulmonary Embolism care so important for Aidoc?

The complexity of treating PEs arises from the variability of presenting symptoms, the interpretation of radiological data and the patient’s clinical risk profile. Therefore, the clinical decision-making process for PE management can be complicated, with consensus on the optimal treatment strategy often hard to reach due to communication barriers, patient heterogeneity and limited availability of clinical risk parameters. This lack of consensus can result in fragmented and, possibly, delayed patient care and an extended hospital length of stay until a treatment decision can be made. 

AI can bridge this gap, providing Radiologists and PERTs with tools to help improve their prioritization awareness and communication methods.  As the PERT Consortium continues to evaluate the clinical outcomes associated with different PE management strategies, Aidoc can give multidisciplinary PERTs the tools to review imaging and clinical data seamlessly. The clinical science behind the management of pulmonary embolism is rapidly changing. Aidoc’s always-on AI exists to ensure relevant clinical stakeholders are alerted and connected to potential consultations and cases as soon as possible.

In The PERT Consortium’s announcement of Aidoc’s partnership, the organization shared that they look forward to collaborating on efforts to advance educational and advocacy efforts in the treatment of pulmonary embolism. What does that look like in terms of the work Aidoc will be doing?
