The Deloitte Fast 500 Factor: From Creating Clinical Solutions to a Hospital Enterprise Vision

In less than a decade, Aidoc has transformed from an AI startup with a few algorithms to an innovator revolutionizing healthcare with a novel, platform approach to hospital care and the most FDA clearances in clinical AI.

It’s one reason we recently landed on Deloitte’s Fast 500 – the list of the fastest growing companies in North America. This recognition was an opportunity to reflect on Aidoc’s evolution from a scrappy startup with a grand vision to a leader in empowering health systems to become intelligence-based, high-performing enterprises, improving patient care across the continuum.

The starting point of AI

Healthcare is a complex environment, so Aidoc’s journey started with  understanding the intricacies that define the industry, from how data flows to dynamics of hospital infrastructure and most importantly, the patient journey. An entry point was identified at the central hub of patient care: radiology. Radiology was the natural choice, as a discipline full of informatics experts, struggling with on-going and anticipated long-term shortages – not to mention the development over the years of machine learning and its ability to scrutinize images. And so that’s where our roots were planted.

Our first release was a triage and notification solution for intracranial hemorrhage, including a clinical study with Sheba Medical Center, Israel’s leading medical institution, one of the earliest Aidoc adopters.

The turning point of clinical AI

Hospitals operate in fragmented fashion, so notifying the radiologist of a critical finding only partially enhances care efficiency. If radiologists could not convey findings quickly to a specialist, the patient outcomes could still suffer. After releasing the pulmonary embolism medical imaging algorithm, Aidoc set out to co-develop collaboration tools, like the PE Care Coordination solution with Yale New Haven Health. Released in 2021, this solution alerts cardiovascular specialists of suspected positive pulmonary embolism cases, sending CT imaging and relevant EMR info to their mobile devices with a chat function in order to expedite time to treatment decision and coordinate care.

However, as Aidoc developed more cross-service line solutions, such as those for cardiovascular and neuro, Aidoc realized that the biggest barrier to AI adoption in health systems was not misperception, but rather capacity to integrate and manage multiple AI solutions. Without addressing the soiling of hospital departments, full stack integration ability, data fragmentation and ongoing monitoring, it would prove difficult to execute a successful enterprise-wide AI transformation.

This led to the development of an AI orchestrator that allows for automated, low-latency management of all AI solutions from a single platform, creating clinical efficiencies, which in turn boost clinical and financial outcomes. This first-of-its-kind AI operating system (aiOSTM), is now used at more than 1,000 medical facilities worldwide.

The next phase

As health system leaders strengthen their AI literacy and develop multi-year AI strategies, technical and strategic support will be needed. That’s where AI providers offering platforms with deep AI integration will take the lead in the market, as health systems opt for working with a handful of AI providers instead of dozens.

With new partnerships and expansions in 2023 – including Northwell Health, Ochsner Health, Lehigh Valley Health Network, University of Miami and Mayo Clinic Platform – Aidoc is committed to working with researchers to develop robust and diverse evidence about AI clinical and financial outcomes.
